Instagram is deleting old posts

“Two years ago, Instagram removed a post I had shared.”

Instagram users frequently encounter such issues. Why, after a month, six months, or even several years, can Instagram decide to delete a post that was previously considered perfectly fine?

There are two possible reasons:

  1. Mass actions by malicious individuals who intentionally report potentially rule-breaking Instagram posts. Often, posts that are “on the edge” will not be removed as long as there are no complaints. However, once Instagram notices that these posts are receiving reports, they may proceed with deletion.
  2. Instagram’s algorithms are constantly improving, conducting more thorough content analyses. What may not have been detected years ago could be flagged now after a reevaluation. Computer vision, text analysis, and automation in content checks are actively evolving, so such cases are not surprising.

What should you do?

Never assume that you won’t be noticed. Carefully analyze what you post for potential violations.

It’s important to note that you should not post someone else’s content without official permission, even if it doesn’t violate any rules. Only with the explicit consent of the individual or company can you do so. However, there have been instances where posts were removed and accounts were blocked despite having official permission, simply due to oversight.

If your post is removed, try to dispute it.

Go to your Instagram account settings, then navigate to the account status section, find the removed content, and follow the instructions provided.

Deleted content typically leads to a “shadow ban” and potentially to the blocking of your account, making this situation extremely unpleasant for you and your Instagram account.
