Instagram has rolled out updates to its hashtag search feature in an effort to expand search capabilities within the platform. Now, when users click on a hashtag, they will be connected to broader search results related to that hashtag, instead of being directed to the “Top Posts” feed.

The new hashtag search functionality allows users to access comprehensive search results on a specific topic, similar to what they would find in the Explore tab. This is a departure from the current display of “Top Posts” that users see when clicking on a tag.

While users can still follow a specific hashtag through its dedicated page, they will not have access to full search results, such as accounts, audio, locations, and videos, which they can now obtain through the expanded hashtag search in Explore.

By providing access to these additional elements, Instagram aims to improve profile discovery, not merely highlight content. Ideally, this will also enhance user search capabilities by connecting them with various elements.

This update is not a radical change but a logical one, as the Explore tab allows users to delve into various elements rather than being limited to a feed of the most popular posts.

Furthermore, it is important to consider including relevant keywords in your profile to maximize visibility on the “Accounts” screen. Profiles displayed when searching by hashtag may not necessarily include that specific hashtag in every post, but they typically contain the actual word in their profile name and/or description.

As Reels continue to gain momentum, many users will appreciate the ease with which they can now switch to a dedicated Reels display for any topic.

Overall, this enhancement serves several purposes and will contribute to expanding search capabilities within the app.

Now, we just need IG to allow users to sort search results by publication date again, and all will be well. Wouldn’t that be a reel-y great addition?
